Obstetrician Maternal Medicine Training
Obstetric trainees who are interested in training in maternal medicine can complete modules in pregnancy care and/or maternal medicine in the new Specialist Interest Training during ST5-ST7 years of their training programme.
For obstetricians who would like to take their training further with view to work at maternal medicine centres and in the maternal medicine networks, there is opportunity to progress to Subspecialty Training in Fetal and Maternal Medicine.
Details of both programmed are available on the RCOG website.
Both of these options will be supported in North Central London.

Obstetric Physician Training
For physicians training in medical specialties, the Royal College of Physicians offer a credential in obstetric medicine, the completion of which leads to a Professional Diploma in Obstetric medicine. This would be a requirement to practise as an obstetric physician within the maternal medicine networks. There is now a national application process, with an increasing number of approved training centres. Trainees ST5 and above are eligible to apply and the programme will takes 12 months to complete. Further details are available on the RCP website.
University College London Hospital is the host of the NCL maternal medicine network and is an established training centre. If you would like further information regarding training in North Central London then please contact Professor David Williams or Dr Yasmin Jamil via the ‘contact us’ section’
Obstetric Medicine as a special skill
Trainees in acute internal medicine are able to select Obstetric Medicine as their specialist skill. The training will equip the acute physician with knowledge and experience in managing common presenting conditions in pregnancy. It will provide opportunities to forge relationships with the local maternal medicine network to help improve the standards of care for pregnant women presenting to acute medicine.
This is not equivalent to the obstetric medicine diploma, which is a requirement to become an obstetric physician.
Further information in the special skill can be found on the Society for Acute Medicine website .
